How ClassDojo Uses AI Tools for Parents and Children
Parent AI Tools
Parents may choose to utilize certain at-home AI tools or features (e.g. Homework Helper or Family Sidekick) by actively engaging with one of our AI tools designed for parents within the Service (“Parent AI Tools”). The parent will provide or upload certain content (e.g. a parent can upload images of worksheets or questions about child development) (“Input”) into the Parent AI Tools to help provide guidance for their child’s homework. These Parent AI Tools are not intended to (and should not) be used by children. Parents may choose to provide Inputs that may contain their child’s personal information and may also contain photos or videos.
ClassDojo will then provide a set of instructions or “prompts” (e.g., “find additional exercises on first grade math related to this worksheet”) (“Prompts”) into the AI-provided tool and will then send both the Input and Prompts to integrated LLM Service Providers, either OpenAI or Anthropic. These LLM Service Providers then perform certain AI-related functions upon the Input in order to produce AI generated responses on the Input called the “Output”. The Output is then returned to ClassDojo by the LLM Service Providers. ClassDojo then takes this Output and presents it to the parent in the Services to allow for their review. Input, Prompt, and Output data processed by the LLM Service Provider is retained only transiently to provide the Service and for trust and safety purposes; then deleted by the LLM Service Provider immediately upon creation of the Outputs.
Child AI Tools
Children may use certain features of our Service (such as our “learn to read” feature) that utilize or integrate AI to help further coach or guide the child through their activities on ClassDojo (“Child AI Tools”). The Child AI Tool may utilize personal information collected from your child as they engage with the Child AI Tool (also referred to as Input). More information on these Child AI Tools is set forth below.
Sparks
Audio Recordings for Reading Lessons
Reading aloud is an essential, research-based part of the learning to read process. In order for ClassDojo to build a meaningful, fully self-directed foundational literacy experience, we need the ability to “listen” to learners read, to understand what was said, and to provide feedback. This allows us to correct, encourage, and teach your child how to read letters, words, and sentences. In the earlier grades (Kinder) this is at the phoneme (“mmm”) and short word (“map”) level. In older grades, we would be trying to understand oral reading fluency (accuracy, automaticity, and prosody/expression) across sentences and paragraphs. It is therefore essential that we have automated speech recognition (“ASR”) in our tool. In connection with ASR, with parental consent, we record and collect your child’s speech (voice recording) through their device’s microphone (e.g. iPad or Chromebook). If the device shows audio is being recorded the indicator will be on.
How do we incorporate ASR?
- ClassDojo processing: Speech (voice recording) is collected off your child’s device by ClassDojo (securely handled and deleted as indicated below) (“Child Reading Lesson Audio”).
- Third party processing: The speech (voice recording) or Child Reading Lesson Audio along with de-identified identifiers is then sent by ClassDojo to be processed by a vetted third party service provider (SpeechSuper) for ASR that meets our data privacy and security requirements and has a signed Data Protection Addendum with ClassDojo. The ASR analysis done by SpeechSuper is then sent back to ClassDojo (“ASR Audio”).
- Third party processing: In addition, with parental consent, we will send the Child Reading Lesson Audio with your child’s first name only to an integrated LLM Service Provider for certain AI uses as further indicated below.
Once we receive the ASR analysis of the voice recording back from our third party service provider, SpeechSuper, the voice recording and the ASR analysis would be deleted from their servers (retained only transiently). ClassDojo would separately retain the Child Reading Lesson Audio (e.g. the initial voice recording collected from your child’s device) to provide the Service, including for the AI uses mentioned below, until your child’s account is inactive. We will also retain the ASR analysis and related metadata sent to us by SpeechSuper on a de-identified basis to use to improve our own internal ASR.
Sparky
Interactions for AI Learning Assistant
ClassDojo may use interactions with Sparks and the Child Reading Lesson Audio collected in connection with the reading lessons (without any ASR analysis or ASR Audio) for certain AI Insights and AI services provided to your child as indicated below. In addition, while interacting with our digital animated AI learning assistant,”Sparky”, throughout our Services, (“AI Learning Assistant”), your child may record their audio only responses to Sparky’s questions (e.g. “What is your favorite color?” “How are you feeling?”) or may respond by choosing certain pre-defined (by ClassDojo) text-based answers. With parental consent, ClassDojo will record your child’s responses and collect your child’s speech (voice recording) through their device’s microphone (e.g. iPad or Chromebook) (“Child Learning Assistant Audio”) as well as any text-based responses or “clickable” actions taken by your child in order to select a response or interact with a game (“Text-Based Child Input”). If the device shows audio is being recorded the indicator will be on. ClassDojo will also collect information about your child’s interactions with the AI Learning Assistant (e.g. which games or lessons have been completed through the Child AI Tools. In addition, ClassDojo or the LLM Service Providers may draw inferences from your child’s interactions with the Child AI Tools. These are inferences that either ClassDojo or the LLM Service Providers draw from the child’s Child Reading Lesson Audio, Child Learning Assistant Audio or Text-Based Child Input (e.g. the child mentioned they like baseball, we feed this back to as Input to the LLM Service Providers to personalize the child’s next interaction with the AI Learning Assistant “Sparky”) (“Child AI Inferences”).
AI Insights on the Child Reading Lesson Audio, Child Learning Assistant Audio and Text-Based Child Input
ClassDojo obtains parental consent prior to allowing any AI processing on children’s personal information (or the disclosure of any children’s personal information to any service provider to perform this processing). ClassDojo utilizes integrated LLM Service Providers to perform certain AI related functions upon the Child Reading Lesson Audio, Child Learning Assistant Audio, Text-Based Child Input, Child AI Inferences, as well as on the additional limited text-based non-identifying information indicated in the chart below (e.g. first name only) (“Non-Identifying Text-Based Information”) in order to obtain AI-generated insights on the reading lessons and your child’s interaction with our animated AI Learning Assistant “Sparky”. The various AI related functions performed on the Child Reading Lesson Audio, Child Learning Assistant Audio, Text-Based Child Input, Child AI Inferences, and Non-Identifying Text-Based Information are done through the use of ClassDojo-directed instructions or “Prompts” to the LLM Service Providers (e.g., “based on the input, generate the next reading lesson for the child”). ClassDojo creates a connection with the LLM Service Providers to send real-time audio and other data to the LLM Service Providers. The Child Reading Lesson Audio, Learning Assistant Audio, Text-Based Child Input, Child AI Inferences, and Non-Identifying Text-Based Information are sent to the LLM Service Providers so as not to identify the child (unless the child may have said their full name during a recorded reading audio session or included in their Text-Based Child Input). The LLM Service Providers then process the Child Reading Lesson Audio, Learning Assistant Audio, Child AI Inferences, Text-Based Child Input and Non-Identifying Text- Based Information (Inputs) and Prompts and generate a result or Output based on those Inputs and Prompts. The LLM Service Providers return the result or Output to ClassDojo who in turn presents the Output to the child real-time (e.g. through our animated AI Learning Assistant “Sparky” presenting additional reading comprehension activities). Input, Prompt, and Output data processed by the LLM Service Providers are retained only transiently to provide the Service and for trust and safety purposes; then deleted immediately upon creation of the Outputs.
What Information is Used to Provide the Parent AI and Child AI Tools
In serving these new Parent AI Tools and Child AI Tools, ClassDojo leverages the following information:
- Inputs from parents, which include images of worksheets and general parenting questions about child development.
- Inputs generated from information collected from children using Sparks, which include audio recordings and text-based input of the child as they work through interactive reading lessons or engage with Sparky as an AI Learning Assistant.
- Prompts or instructions from ClassDojo, such as “Find additional exercises on first grade math related to this worksheet” or “My child needs additional help with potty training, find me resources” or “Tell a joke at the end of the Sparks lesson“.
- Outputs which include AI-generated text suggestions, animated interactions with children, and further questions.
All information from the Parent AI Tools and Child AI Tools provided to the LLM Service Providers are securely transmitted to the LLM Service Providers for processing, stored transiently in the United States, and encrypted both in transit and at rest. Our data retention policies ensure Inputs, Prompts, and Outputs are deleted by the LLM Service Providers after processing, and that Outputs retained by ClassDojo are safeguarded and stored securely in alignment with ClassDojo’s existing policies.
The following charts provide more detail on the information used to provide the various Parent AI Tools and Child AI Tools (broken down into Parent AI Tools and Child AI Tools) as well as the processes or “Prompts” performed on the “Inputs” to obtain the results or “Output.” We will update these charts as we update our features to provide you with the information necessary 1) for you to make an informed decision on whether or not to use the Parent AI Tools; or 2) to provide parents with additional information and seek additional parental consent under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and its implementing regulations under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (collectively “COPPA”) for any additional children’s personal information that is used in connection with the Child AI Tools.

How ClassDojo Uses Information to Provide Parent AI Tools and Child AI Tools?
Parent AI Tools
Parents will provide into the ClassDojo Parent AI Tool, Inputs, such as images of educational worksheets or questions about child development. Additionally, ClassDojo will provide a set of instructions or “Prompts.” ClassDojo will then send both the Input and Prompts to an integrated LLM Service Provider (e.g OpenAI or Anthropic), to perform certain AI related functions upon the Input in order to produce AI-generated responses on the Input called “Output”. To protect the privacy of users, ClassDojo does not otherwise share any direct identifiers of children to the LLM Service Provider (except to the extent a parent may have included any direct identifiers within their parent provided Input). The Parent AI Tools are not intended to (and should not be) used by children.
Data obtained from the Inputs, Prompts, and Outputs may be accessed, processed, and used by ClassDojo to provide, improve (as allowed by law) and maintain the Service, enforce our policies, perform internal analysis (including to provide metrics and data logs or activity records needed for measuring up/down time and debugging the tools), and keep our platform safe and secure. For example, the Inputs and Prompts will be sent to the LLM Service Provider to create AI generated text tips on how to help your child with their homework. Parent AI Tools
ClassDojo employs many of the same safety measures it utilizes on the Child AI Tools mentioned above for monitoring the Prompts, Input and Output in its Parents AI Tools. In addition, ClassDojo will instruct the LLM Service Providers to (i) respond appropriately (e.g. don’t return a result, escalate, etc.) if the LLM Service Provider detects the parent has entered a question in the Parent AI Tool that will result in physical, mental, or emotional harm to a child and (ii) not to return any results it detects a parent has uploaded an image or document that is not an educational worksheet when utilizing the Homework and Educational Helper Parent AI Tool.
Most of our Parent AI Tools are not “real-time” interactive, giving parents the ability to review the Output before using it with their child. Parents will also have the ability to delete any of their Inputs and both Inputs and Outputs will be deleted once the parent account is inactive, unless we are required by law to retain.
Limitations of ClassDojo Parent AI Tools and Child AI Tools
While these Parent AI Tools and Child AI Tools mentioned above are designed to support and enrich learning, it is crucial to recognize that the AI-generated content and solutions provided by our platform are not perfect and are based on and limited to the data the AI has been trained on. As a result, there may be instances where the AI’s outputs might not fully grasp the nuances of a new or complex problem, leading to potential inaccuracies, incorrect or misleading information, or misinterpretations.
Given the reliance on AI to tailor educational content and provide immediate assistance, we recommend parents critically assess the AI’s guidance and verify its accuracy, especially when it pertains to complex subjects or advanced topics and have provided the ability for parents to review on the various AI insights or “Outputs” before using this with their child. For our Child AI Tools where human review may not be present to do the “real-time” responses and interactions, ClassDojo uses both manual and automatic safety testing to proactively gain confidence in the safety of the Outputs. ClassDojo is committed to reducing the limitations of AI by focusing on responsible AI development. This includes ensuring that our Parent AI Tools and Child AI Tools are built with privacy, security, inclusion, trust, and safety at their core. Our approach to integrating AI into educational tools reflects our dedication to providing a supportive, effective, and respectful learning environment for all users.
