How can I delete my account?
Teachers and Parents can delete their accounts by going into their Account Settings or by submitting a request using this form.
Please see here to exercise your applicable data subject rights.
What happens when I delete my account?
When you delete your account, you will not be able to log into your account because your registration information will be deleted. Additional information associated with your account will be fully deleted or retained depending on how you use ClassDojo as shared below.
For non-student users (as well as Outside School Child Users), personal information associated with your account will be kept until your account is deleted or until we no longer need the data to provide the Service, whichever occurs first. Additionally, some data is deleted or anonymized automatically after a set period of time. You can read more information on our retention periods, including how long it takes us to delete your information, below. Information that you have shared with others, others have shared about you, or content other users may have copied and stored is not part of your account and may not be deleted when you delete your account. Even if you delete your account, keep in mind that the deletion by our service providers may not be immediate and the deleted information may persist in backup copies for a reasonable period of time.
Please be aware below of what is and is not deleted when you choose to delete your account through your Account Settings or request that ClassDojo delete your account.
Teacher
When deleting a ClassDojo teacher account, the teacher’s email address, information necessary to validate a password or login (we don’t store the actual password itself), profile photos, IP addresses, device tokens, and any other information (subject to the exceptions below)** provided to ClassDojo will be deleted. This includes the permissions granted through mobile application permissions. Please note that your IP address will be retained (in truncated or encrypted form) for an additional six months before deletion for security and safety purposes.
Classes initially created by the teacher, but then shared with another teacher, will transfer ownership to one of the other teachers in the class and will not be deleted. If the teacher’s school would like these classes to be deleted, then please have the school principal or district leader reach out to us here. Unclaimed student profiles (i.e. profiles of students who are not in a school directory, a class, or connected to a parent account) will also be deleted.
** What is NOT deleted until we receive direction from your school principal or district leader:
- Teacher name (needed for school legal compliance reasons)
- Unshared classes
- All messages sent to parents are retained and can still be viewed by the parent.
- Any content uploaded, including text, photos, and videos, on the Class Story or School Story or in messaging with parents. *Note though that your Class Story or School Story posts will still be visible, but your name will no longer be visible as the “commenter.”
- Additionally, any content (such as Activities) or messaging (such as Portfolio comments) uploaded by a teacher in a Student portfolio will also be retained.
- Events
- Any Student Account connected to the teacher account and the associated student education records
- Feedback points will be automatically deleted (or de-identified and aggregated) after 12 months (and associated comments will be deleted automatically after 12 months).
- De-identified product events (retained if school requests deletion)
These are kept after deletion of the teacher account for school legal compliance reasons (e.g., maintenance of “education records” under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) or “Student Data” under state student privacy laws or similar laws in international jurisdictions) and will not be deleted until we receive direction from the school. However, this data listed above (except as noted) is hidden from view when the teacher account is deleted. If the teacher’s school or district would like this information deleted off of our servers, please have the school principal or district leader reach out to us here.
Parent
When deleting a ClassDojo parent account, the parent’s name, email address, information necessary to validate a password or login (we don’t store the actual password itself), IP addresses, device tokens, and any other information (subject to the exceptions below)** provided to ClassDojo will be deleted. This includes the permissions granted through mobile application permissions and any content and information provided while using ClassDojo not connected to a school. Please note that your IP address will be retained for an additional six months before deletion for security and safety purposes.
** What is NOT deleted until we receive direction from your child’s school principal or district leader:
- Messages and any content sent to teachers are retained and can be viewed by the teacher.
- Any content uploaded, including photos, videos, and comments on the Class Story or School Story.
- Any Student Data that a parent may have uploaded into their child’s Student Account or Portfolio.
- De-identified product events (retained if school requests deletion)
These are kept after deletion of the parent account for school legal compliance reasons (e.g., maintenance of “education records” under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) or “Student Data” under state student privacy laws or similar laws in international jurisdictions) and will not be deleted until we receive direction from the school. However, the data listed above is hidden (except as noted) from view when a parent account is deleted. *Note that your Class Story or School Story posts will still be visible, but your name will no longer be visible as the “commenter.” If a parent would like any of these messages or content deleted, they should make that request to their child’s school. If we receive a valid request from the school, we will delete this content. Additionally, please note that if you have a child (or children) with School Accounts connected to your account, these School Accounts of your children will not be deleted unless a separate request is made. Similarly, certain information we are unable to delete unless we receive the request from your child’s school.
You should be aware that your child’s feedback points and associated comments awarded in school are deleted after one year (or on a rolling basis). *Note that feedback points may be de-identified and aggregated instead of deleted.
Student Account
When deleting a ClassDojo Student Account, the student’s username and information necessary to validate a password or login (we don’t store the actual password itself), device tokens or any other device-specific information, location information (note that we do not collect precise geolocation information from students) and IP addresses will be deleted. Please see below for a child utilizing ClassDojo not connected to a school (e.g. an Outside School Child User). Note that feedback points will be automatically deleted (or de-identified and aggregated) after 12 months, and associated comments will be deleted automatically after 12 months.
Please note that your IP addresses will be retained (in truncated or encrypted form) for an additional six months before deletion for security and safety purposes.
Additionally, even if a Student Account is not deleted, personal information from inactive Student Accounts will be hidden from the view of users but will remain on our servers until we receive direction from the student’s school principal or district leader to delete it.
** What is NOT deleted until we receive direction from the student’s school principal or district leader:
- Student's name, originally provided by the teacher
- Any content submitted within or through a Student Account, such as Student Activity Responses and other content uploaded by the student and/or teacher in a student’s portfolios
- Student’s comments or “likes” on a Class Story. *Note that students' Class Story posts will still be visible, but their name will no longer be visible as the “commenter”.
- Class Island and ClassDojo Monster Customizer data. If a student’s teacher has consented for students to utilize Dojo Island in school (“Class Island”) and engage with the ClassDojo Monster Customizer in the classroom with their Student Account, product events, and other activities taken within Class Island (e.g. what activities inside the Class Island a student has completed along with their score (e.g. 200 coins earned for completing an adventure and how many times (or how) the student has decorated their own island or monster) as well as their interactions with other students) will remain on our servers.
This content will be kept after the Student Account is deleted for school legal compliance reasons (e.g., maintenance of “education records” under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) or “Student Data” under state student privacy laws or similar laws in international jurisdictions). However, this data is hidden from view when a Student Account is deleted. If a parent would like this content deleted, please put in a request to your child’s school. Additionally, if a teacher would like this deleted and the school determines that the request should be implemented, the school may submit the request to delete this content to ClassDojo by contacting us here. If we receive a valid request from the school, we will delete this content.
Outside School Child Users
When a parent (for users under the age of 13) or a minor over the age of 13 requests deletion of a ClassDojo Outside School Child User Account, all the child’s personal information associated with the Outside School Child User Account will be deleted. This includes the permissions granted through mobile application permissions. A parent or minor (over the age of 13) can request deletion of their (or their child’s) Outside School Child User Account by contacting us here. This includes the child’s username and information necessary to validate a password or login (we don’t store the actual password itself) if they previously had one), device tokens or any other device-specific information, location information (note that we do not collect precise geolocation information from children) and IP addresses will be deleted. Please note that your child’s IP addresses will be retained (in truncated or encrypted form) for an additional six months before deletion for security and safety purposes.
Additionally, any personal information or other content that the child uploaded or that ClassDojo collected will be deleted, including any personal information associated with Dojo Island or the ClassDojo Shop if used in connection with the child’s Outside School Child User Account. Note that if the child also has a Student Account, this personal information will remain on our servers as set forth in the Student Account section above.
If an Outside School Child User Account is not deleted, the personal information associated with this account will be kept until we no longer need the data to provide the Service. Additionally, for any inactive Outside School Child User Account, we will delete all personal information connected with this account.
What is deleted when a school requests deletion?
When ClassDojo receives a valid deletion request from an authorized school representative (e.g. Principal or equivalent level school official), ClassDojo will delete all of the requested school, student, or teacher data, except as noted below. The following will be retained:
- Any teacher Account Data login information when the teacher is also part of another school (e.g. another school in the same district) or waiting to be verified into another school.
- Student photos (e.g. from the Memories or Photobook product) and Portfolio content a parent elects to save or download (including saving to their current parent account or their child’s Outside School Child Account).
- Class Island Student-Generated Content (or other Student-Generated Content) a parent or child elects to save or download (including saving to their current parent account or their (or their child’s) Outside School Child Account).
- Any Student Data that the school or district has agreed can be linked with the student’s Outside School Child Account (pursuant to the Student DPA and Terms of Service) will be kept at the request of the student’s parent.
- De-identified information.
What information can a teacher delete directly through the Service?
A teacher or other school administrator can delete the following information directly through the Service*:
- Stories
- Comments
- Announcements
- Teacher Messages
- Students
- Portfolio Posts
*Please note however, that this information is “hidden” and still appears on our servers until we receive a formal deletion request from your school. The appropriate school official (e.g. Principal level or equivalent) may contact us here to request this deletion.
How long does ClassDojo retain my personal information?
School Use
Student Users:
Retention and deletion of Student Data and education records is at the direction of the school. We enter into Student Data Privacy Addendums (“Student DPA”) with schools or districts that further describe our duties, responsibilities, and commitments with respect to Student Data that we collect or receive. There may be some content created by students that a parent, legal guardian or student may also elect to maintain when a school requests deletion, known as Student-Generated Content. In addition, we will not retain student personal information for any longer than is necessary for educational purposes and legal obligations or to provide the Service for which we receive or collect the student personal information.
Separately, we protect students with our industry-leading 2-Tier Student Data Protection Policy: we automatically delete their Feedback Points (or de-identify and aggregate) and associated comments awarded in school after a year, and we delete Students’ Accounts if they’re inactive for more than twelve months. Please note that some content within a student account utilized in school or for educational purposes connected to a school or classroom (“Student Account”) will still be kept after deletion of the account for school legal compliance reasons (e.g. maintenance of “education records” under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) or “Student Data” under state student privacy laws or similar laws in international jurisdictions) and will not be deleted until we receive direction from the school. This can include content uploaded by a student, teacher, school leader, or parent.
ClassDojo retains Student Data until (1) it is instructed to delete it by schools, in which case the deletion schedule is as set forth in the applicable Student DPA or International Data Protection Addendum (“Int. DPA”) with schools; or (2) the agreement with the school is terminated, in which case the Student Data will be deleted by ClassDojo within 60 days of termination (unless otherwise required by law). If the underlying agreement and the Student DPA or Int. DPA has lapsed or is not terminated, the Student Data will be deleted (i) according to ClassDojo’s standard destruction schedule, or (iii) as otherwise required by law.
ClassDojo’s standard destruction schedule for school data, including Student Data, is when the data associated with the individual student (or class) reaches the 12th grade plus an additional 2 years (kept to assist schools with record-keeping obligations). If a student (or the associated parent) still maintains an account on ClassDojo (e.g. such as an Outside School Account), prior to deletion, we may provide the student or parent notice and time to move such content to their Outside School Account.
Deletion protocols are subject to compliance by ClassDojo with its legal obligations or to protect the safety of the Services. The duty of the ClassDojo to dispose of or delete Student Data shall not extend to:
- De-identified Data;
- Student-Generated Content that has been transferred or kept by the parent or student pursuant to the Student DPA (or Int. DPA as applicable) with schools; or
- Any Student Data that the school has agreed can be linked with the student’s Outside School Child Account (pursuant to the Student DPA and Terms of Service) and will be kept at the request of the student’s parent.
Please see our Information Transparency Chart for more specific information on retention periods of specific personal information.
Non-Student Users:
For teachers, School Leaders (and other school users), as well as parents and other family users that use ClassDojo in connection with school use, we also retain this information as the direction of the school as set forth above under “student users.” In addition, we will delete the information requested by individual users as set forth in the specific sections above for each user type.
Separately, we act as a controller for certain limited “Account Data” for non-student users that we will retain until requested to be deleted by the specific user or until such time as the user account is no longer active.
“Account Data” is set forth in our Student DPA and Int. DPA as the following:
“Account Data” means information that LEA or LEA’s End Users provide directly to ClassDojo in connection with the creation or administration of its ClassDojo account, such as name, screen name, email address, school and class affiliation of a parent, and password of a LEA or an LEA End User (e.g. a parent or teacher) but shall otherwise exclude LEA’s End User Data as well as any student registration data.
Outside School Use (not used in connection with a school)
Children:
ClassDojo will not retain an Outside School Child User’s personal information for any longer than is reasonably necessary to fulfill the specific purpose for which the information was collected, including to provide the Service for which we receive or collect the child’s personal information, including if a child’s parent directs us to retain certain content by electing to purchase our Memories or Dojo Photobooks features, or for legal obligations. Additionally, we only keep a child’s personal information for as long as his or her Outside School Child Account is active, unless we are required by law to retain it, need it to ensure the security of our community or our Service, or to enforce our Terms (which still not include retaining indefinitely).
We determine the appropriate retention period for personal information on the basis of the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the personal information being processed, the potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure of the personal information, whether we can achieve the purposes of the processing through other means, and on the basis of applicable legal requirements (such as applicable statutes of limitations). The time periods for which we retain children's personal information depend on the purposes for which we use it. Personal information associated with your account will be kept until your account is deleted or is inactive, unless we no longer need the data to provide products and services, in which case we will delete prior to you deleting your account or your account becoming inactive. Additionally, some data is de-identified automatically after a set period of time.
Please see our Information Transparency Chart and AI Transparency Note for more details on specific retention periods.
Adults:
We store your personal information for as long as it is necessary to provide the Service to you and others, as described in our Privacy Policy. The time periods for which we retain your personal information depend on the purposes for which we use it. Personal information associated with your account will be kept until your account is deleted unless we no longer need the data to provide products and services, in which case we will delete prior to you deleting your account. Additionally, some data is deleted or de-identified automatically after a set period of time (e.g. we will delete personal information if a user account is inactive). Please see our Information Transparency Chart for more specific information on retention periods of specific personal information.
All Users - School Use or Outside School Use
For any user account, even if you delete your account, keep in mind that the deletion by our service providers may not be immediate and the deleted information may persist in backup copies for a reasonable period of time. We may retain de-identified data for as long as we deem appropriate (or as allowed by law).
Please note that for all user types we may also have to retain some information after your account is deleted or closed, to comply with legal obligations, to protect the safety and security of our community or our Service, or to prevent abuse of our Terms of Service.
Additional examples of when we may need to retain personal information after your account is deleted:
- Our contractual or business relationship with you.
- Financial recordkeeping – when you make a payment to us (e.g. for ClassDojo Plus) we are often required to retain this information for a longer period of time for purposes of account, dispute investigation and resolution, and compliance with tax, anti-money laundering, and other financial regulations.
- Direct communication with us – if you have directly communicated with us through a customer support channel, feedback form, or bug report, we may retain reasonable records of those communications.
For more details, please read the “What happens when I delete my account?” section above.
How do I keep my (or my child’s) Student-Generated Content?
ClassDojo may contact you from time to time about your options to keep your or (your child’s) Student-Generated Content, or you may see “just in time” notices within the product prompting you at a specific point in time to give your permission to download or transfer the Student-Generated Content to your Outside School Account.
