What is Student Linking?
The process of matching students in the ClassDojo Directory 1:1 with students in your Student Information System (SIS).
How do I link students?
The student matching tool will guide you through the linking process and suggest probable matches when they exist. Easy cases with one high-quality match can be linked with one button click. You may choose to stop linking after these are completed. Or, if you want perfect 1:1 matching for all students, you will need to spend more time resolving partial matches and multiple matches.
This may take 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the size of your school and how clean your ClassDojo directory already is. Our implementation team is happy to meet with school Admins and walk them through this entire process.
Who can link students?
Administrators.
Administrators in the school include District Leaders added to the school, verified School Leaders, and designated Admins with access to the Directory. If you do not have access to the tool and believe you should, please contact support using the link at the bottom of this page.
Why link students?
So their families don’t need to reconnect during back-to-school.
Linked students will be kept when rostering is turned on and their existing family connections and account history will be retained.
What happens to students who are not linked?
Students who are not linked will be archived when roster syncing turns on, and they will disappear from your active roster.
When do I need to link by?
Before student syncing turns on.
You should get an email from your District Leader on the exact student syncing date. Unlinked students will be graduated at that point.
Note: Depending on the back-to-school date, some districts may have a slightly longer grace period for linking. If that’s the case in your district, you will receive an email.
Do I need to link every student?
No, you have several options:
- Link all students (ideal): This is the most thorough option. Find a link for every student in the SIS who already has an account on ClassDojo. Only families who are new to the school will need to reconnect this fall.
- Link those ‘Ready for Linking’ (fast compromise): The fast option. Use one button click to link all of the high-confidence matches that are "Ready for Linking". Some family connections and student history will be kept. In other cases they’ll be reset. We suggest this as the minimum.
- Link no students (most work for teachers & families): You’ll need to reconnect all families this fall, and student history will be reset. We recommend avoiding this approach unless your school is ready for a full reset.
What happens if I see that the wrong kids are linked before student syncing is enabled?
You can easily unlink the students. If a mistake is made, it can be overridden by clicking on a student in the linked section.
What happens if I see that the wrong kids are linked after student syncing is enabled?
Write in and we’ll help fix the issue.
Once student syncing is turned on, you will need to write to the support team (link below) to remove bad links. Until someone corrects the issue, messages may go to the wrong family. Match suggestions are conservative to minimize the chance of bad links.
Should I worry about data privacy for wrong links?
Wrong linking issues will be rare and easy to fix.
For our “ready to link” student records, we’ve carefully matched both student and connected parent information across ClassDojo data and your SIS, similar to checking names when admitting parents to your physical buildings. For the more complicated cases, we advocate delegating the connection decision to school staff who know your SIS records and the students and families directly. These staff members already make similar decisions today when adults contact them physically or virtually.
If any erroneous connections are made, teachers can directly and immediately terminate these connections themselves, as they’ve had the ability to remove parents for years (see this article for more information). Otherwise, feel free to reach out if you come across an anomaly first. We’re here to support your district however we can.
