2026 COPPA Consent Update FAQ

Before your child can use ClassDojo, we need your consent. Here's what that means.

Our core commitments:

These are the commitments we make to protect your family:

  1. We never sell your child's personal information to third parties. We only share your child's information with the third-party service providers we need to run the platform, and they're held to strict privacy and security requirements.
  2. We don't show third-party ads to children, and we never use your child's personal information for behaviorally-targeted advertising or third-party advertising.
  3. Providing your consent here doesn't sign your child up for any optional ClassDojo products. Each optional product (ClassDojo Plus, Dojo Sparks, and Dojo Tutor) has its own separate sign-up that requires your consent before we collect or use your child's personal information for those purposes.

What does the separate "sharing" consent mean?

We want to be clear about the different ways your child's personal information may be shared within ClassDojo:

  1. Sharing across ClassDojo products. If you (or your child) choose to use one of our optional non-school features or products (like Plus or Home Islands), some limited information from your child's Student Account flows into that product so it works as intended. For example, with Home Islands, your child's points and other game currency earned, as well as their island creations created while playing in Class Islands in school, are shared to their Home Islands.
  2. Linking ClassDojo accounts. If you choose to use one of our other products, you can link your ClassDojo account with that service. For example, if you sign up for Dojo Tutor using your ClassDojo account, ClassDojo may use your login credentials (e.g., email address, username) and your child's name (and possibly other limited fields of Student Data or personal information that you allow) to pre-populate your Dojo Tutor profile.
  3. If you don't use a non-school feature or product, this kind of cross-product sharing or account linking doesn't happen. (For details, see our FAQ on Information Sharing.)

Note: The sharing consent is not a consent to share your child's information with non-integral third parties. You can visit our service providers page to see which third-party operators may collect or maintain personal information from children through the service. For any non-integral third-party disclosures, we will provide a separate consent.

What am I being asked to consent to?

The screen has two checkboxes. Here's what each one actually means:

  1. ClassDojo collecting and using your child's personal information
This covers the core platform: your child's account, class updates, photos and messages from their teacher, and Class Story. This is what makes ClassDojo work as a school communication tool. Depending on how your child uses ClassDojo, this covers their Student Account and/or their Outside School Child Account.

How this consent works: Privacy laws require that a parent or guardian give permission before we collect or use your child's personal information. That permission can come in one of two ways:

    • From your child's school — when a school or teacher sets up your child's Student Account, the school provides this consent on your behalf (called "school consent"). This is also covered by the Student Data Privacy Addendum we enter into with schools and districts.
    • From you directly — if you set up your child's account yourself before it was connected to a school, ClassDojo collects consent directly from you as the parent. (See our consent FAQ for details.) By checking this box, you're also confirming that consent extends to any home use of ClassDojo.

We also collect this consent in advance for optional home features (e.g., Home Islands or Quizzes), but we do not collect or use your child's information unless your child actually uses those features.

  2. Use and sharing of some of your child's student data across ClassDojo's school and non-school products

Why this separate consent exists: Student privacy laws — including FERPA in the US and equivalent laws in other countries — place special restrictions on how school records can be used outside their original educational purpose. Even within ClassDojo's own products, we need your explicit permission before school-side information can flow to home-side features. This checkbox gives us that permission — and only that. We have also obtained authorization through our Student Data Privacy Addendum and Terms of Service with schools to allow this limited use. If your school has a custom addendum that limits this sharing, we honor that, too.

What this enables: This allows sharing across ClassDojo products as described in the section above — only in the event you or your child choose to use an optional feature or product. Only certain information is shared, such as your child's first name, grade, and login information, to create a seamless experience. Without it, you'd have to re-enter that information manually and some features wouldn't work.

What this doesn't do: It doesn't sign your child up for any other ClassDojo products, it doesn't authorize sharing information with additional third parties, and no personal information is shared until you or your child actively choose to use an optional feature or product.

A note for families outside the U.S.

The permission screen is structured around COPPA, a U.S. children's privacy law, and we present the same screen worldwide for transparency and to extend the same privacy protections to all jurisdictions (even if not legally required to do so). Depending on where you live, the legal basis works a little differently:

  • EU & UK families: For your child's school use, your child's school is typically the data controller and relies on its own lawful basis under UK/EU GDPR — your permission isn't the primary legal basis for that processing. This permission  covers your child's use of optional home features, where your direct permission  is required, regardless of country.
  • Families in other countries: Many countries have equivalent children's privacy laws (e.g., PIPEDA in Canada, the Privacy Act in Australia). ClassDojo complies with applicable local law in all regions, and your school's agreement with ClassDojo often covers the school-use portion. This consent extends those protections to optional home features.

In every region, our core commitments above — no selling, no using your child’s personal information to target ads, no sign-ups without separate consent — apply equally.

If you have concerns or questions, please reach out to us at privacy@classdojo.com — we'd rather hear from you than lose your trust.
