Family Chat FAQ

Parties, playdates, and pick-ups, oh my! ClassDojo is here to help you stay connected with your child's community. With Family chats, you can send private messages to families connected to the same class as your student.

How do I opt in?

In order to be reachable via Family chats, your school and teacher need to have this feature turned on. You also need to allow families to message you from your account settings. Please note that, if you do not see this setting, this is an indication that Family chat has not been enabled for your school.

If your school and teacher have enabled Family Chat from their end, you will then have the option to enable Family chat from your Account settings. In your Account Settings > scroll down to the "Messaging" section. This is where you will see the option to allow "Families, teachers, and leaders" to message you.

Why can't I message another family?

There are a few reasons you might not be seeing the option to create a Family chat. Firstly, your School Leader and your Teacher must turn this feature on. If you do not see the option to create a message with another family member, please reach out to your school to ask about having this turned on. (Psst... If your school has any questions, you could pass them this FAQ. 😉)

If you see the option to message some families but the family member you are looking for does not appear, it is possible that the family has not opted into Family chats.

Who can I message?

If Family chat is turned on for your school and your class, you can create a message with any family member who is connected to a class with your student, as long as they have enabled this feature in their Account settings.

What if I don't want someone to message me?

We know that Family chat is only beneficial if it is safe and positive. If you would like to prevent a particular user from messaging you but do not want to opt out of Family chats altogether, you can block a user.

Can I create a group?

Absolutely! Need to coordinate a class party or a field trip? You can add any number of family members to a group chat. You can even rename the messaging group to make it easier to locate in the future. Families cannot include teachers in group messages at this time.

What about read receipts?

If both users have enabled read receipts for Family chats, you will be able to see when another family member has viewed your message. If you disable this within your account or the other family disables this, neither user will see read receipts in the conversation.

Family members are not able to see read receipts from teachers unless the teacher has specifically opted to turn this feature on.
