Parent Chat FAQ for Families

Parent Chat is an optional way for families on ClassDojo to connect, while protecting your privacy.  It’s designed for positive, everyday uses like planning playdates, arranging carpools, or coordinating teacher gifts – all without sharing phone numbers or emails.

Here’s what you need to know.

Q. What is Parent Chat?

A. Parent Chat lets you send private messages to other families in your child’s class or school— only if you both choose to connect. It’s a way to coordinate plans, share updates, or just say hello without using personal contact info.

Q. Do I have to use Parent Chat?

A. No, it’s entirely optional. You choose if you want to be contacted by other families. If you opt out, your name won’t appear in anyone’s contact list, and you won’t receive messages from other families. Your child’s teacher or other school staff will still be able to reach you.

Q. How do I set my privacy?

A. In your ClassDojo account settings, you can choose who can start chats with you:

  • Anyone on ClassDojo
  • Families in your child’s  school, classes, and groups
  • Teachers and Staff only

At any time, you can also:

  • Block specific people
  • Report inappropriate messages to ClassDojo
  • Leave any conversation anytime

You’re always in control, and can change your settings whenever you like.

Q. Is my contact information private?

A. Yes. Other families never see your phone number or email address. All messages happen within ClassDojo.

Q. Who sees my messages?

A. Just you and the other families in the conversation. Teachers and school staff don’t see or monitor your private conversations.

Q. Is Parent Chat safe and private?

A. Yes – it’s built with privacy in mind.

  • Contact information is never shared with families you chat with
  • It’s separate from school-data and communication systems

Q. What if I have a problem?

A. You can block the person, leave the chat, or report the message directly in ClassDojo. Our team will review and take action if needed - teachers and school staff are not expected to get involved.

Bottom line:

Parent Chat is your space to connect with other families—safely, privately, and only if you choose. It allows you to connect directly with other families, so teachers and school staff no  longer have to act as go-betweens, giving them more time to focus on teaching and supporting students
