We’ve introduced a feature that lets middle school and high school teachers and students message directly in ClassDojo, one-on-one or in groups. This is built for grades 6–12 to keep students engaged, informed, and supported. 💚 This feature is only available if it's enabled by the school district and the school.
Here’s what families need to know:
Who can message students?
To keep things safe, only school-approved teachers, coaches, and staff connected to a class can message students. A teacher must send the first message—students can't start a chat on their own. The school administrator must enable this feature. 🔒
Can parents be included in a group chat with their student and the teacher?
For students in grades 6-8, families will always be included in conversations by default.
For older students (grades 9-12), teachers can either message students directly or create group messages that include both the student and their families.
- Please note: Family members cannot be added to existing chat threads between student and teacher. However, the teacher can create a new thread that includes everyone.
What devices are compatible?
Students can use Teacher-to-Student Messaging on the Android and iOS apps, as well as on the website using a computer or Chromebook.
Can messages be deleted?
- Teachers can delete their own messages.
- Students cannot delete messages.
- Teachers can't delete student messages, but they can report them to ClassDojo’s Trust & Safety team.
What happens if something inappropriate is sent?
Keeping ClassDojo and school communities safe is a shared responsibility. For guidance on reporting any illegal or potentially harmful messaging content on ClassDojo, please see this article.
Will students get notifications?
Yes! Students can opt in to receive push notifications for new messages.
Can I see my student’s messages?
Yes! In the iOS or Android app on your parent account, navigate to the "Kids" tab and tap on "Chats" to see their conversations.
How will I know if my student is messaging with a teacher?
You’ll get an email the first time a teacher starts messaging your student. ✉️
How do students log in?
Students in participating districts can set up their accounts in three ways:
- Email invitation: Students receive an email invitation from their teacher and follow the link to join their school on ClassDojo. If a student can't find the email, ask them to check their spam or junk folder. Teachers can resend the invitation from their class settings.
- Mobile app: Students download the ClassDojo app, tap "I'm a student," then tap "Sign in with school account" to log in with their school credentials.
-
ClassDojo.com: Students go to ClassDojo.com, select "Get started" as a Student, and log in with Google.
- Note: Web onboarding is currently only available for schools using Google as their sign-in provider. Schools using Microsoft will continue to use the email invitation or mobile app options.
