Outside School Child User, Outside School Child Account, Student, and Student Account have the meanings set forth in our Key Terms. Any data collected from an Outside School Child User would not be considered Student Data. Any Student Account (or access to a Student Account) created for the student by the parent, or the Student’s teacher in class, or the Student directly are linked together (these are not different accounts). ClassDojo permits Students to associate an Outside School Child Account with their Student Account by using the same login credentials associated with an Outside School Child Account to join a class or use the account for school-directed learning. Additionally, non-Student Users (e.g. parent user or other Family User) are permitted to associate their Family Outside School Accounts with their School Accounts. If a user chooses to associate an Outside School Account with either their Student Account or School Account (as applicable), the two accounts will be deemed "Linked Accounts.” The “link” is that these Linked Accounts will use the same login and same “Dojo”/name to access both accounts, but the product data for in-school and out of school use is stored separately and only certain content will be viewable by School Personnel as noted here. Note, however, that the login data (the username and password) is stored in one place and shared between both the Outside School Child Account and the Student Account. Parents and Students can also choose to reuse an existing Student Account for home use or create a new Outside School Child Account for home activity not associated with a school or classroom.
Feedback Points awarded by teachers at school, Student Activity Responses, Portfolio Posts, Chats, Class Story, School Story, and other similar features built for use in school are separate product features from the non-school ClassDojo Plus features and other non-school use, including those used by an Outside School Child User (such as Home Islands or Family Chat and Family Communities). For clarity, any Family Chat, including parent-to-parent messaging where a teacher or school administrator is not included (“Family Chat”) and parent-to-parent groups when teachers do not participate (“Family Communities”), are considered non-school features. The school-based product has a completely separate backend implementation from non-school use and the product data is stored separately as noted below.
While point reports for at-home points and school feedback points appear in the same point reports, parents have access to feedback points only via reports that are shared by the teacher, and this data is stored separately. See below for more information.
Additional Definitions
“ClassDojo Plus” is an optional subscription for families to bring the magic of ClassDojo home by providing more ways to support, celebrate, and connect with their kids.
“Dojo Islands” is a virtual world where kids can safely engage in various activities (e.g., play certain games, learn, explore, and build) and interact with other children. Dojo Islands includes both Class Islands and Home Islands as defined below.
Class Islands:
If a student is connected to a teacher who has chosen to allow their students to access Dojo Islands in the classroom, this is our “Class Islands” product. In Class Islands, students interact with other classmates.
Home Islands:
Dojo Islands can also be used at home (not connected to a school) with an Outside School Child Account (“Home Islands”). Parents can disable Home Islands for their child. This will prevent them from using Home Islands outside of school, but will not affect use of Class Islands in school. For more information see our FAQ.
What data is shared between Student Accounts and Outside School Child Accounts?
Except as set forth below, data for an Outside School Child Account or features used in the non-school context are stored separately and have separate features geared towards non-school use. ClassDojo obtains parental consent for any sharing of Student Data between a Student Account and Outside School Child Account. Additionally, we have also obtained authorization through our Student Data Privacy Addendum and Terms of Service) entered into with schools or districts to allow for this limited use and sharing of Student Data or education records. If a school or district has a custom Student Data Privacy Addendum that limits this sharing, we will honor this.
Shared Data:
-
Any Student Data, personal information, or content that a parent provides consent for sharing between a Student Account and Outside School Child Account. See below for a list of current sharing a parent may consent for:
Account Linking
Parents may choose to link their ClassDojo account with a Dojo Tutor Services or another ClassDojo service (“ClassDojo Additional Services”). If a parent signs up for Dojo Tutor Services or ClassDojo Additional Services using their ClassDojo account, ClassDojo may share and use the parent’s ClassDojo Services login credentials (e.g., ClassDojo email address, user name) and their child’s name (and possibly other limited fields of Student Data or personal information of the child that the parent allows) to pre-populate the parent’s Dojo Tutor Services or ClassDojo Additional Services profile. Parents will have been prompted with Direct Notice of, and will have consented to, that use and sharing of their child’s Student Data and personal information for this use. While the child’s personal information (e.g., name) and tutoring information (e.g., tutoring assessments) will be linked and accessible in both the parent’s ClassDojo Additional Services, Dojo Tutor Services, and ClassDojo Services accounts, the child’s Student Account information on ClassDojo will remain separate and viewable only through the parent’s ClassDojo Services login, ensuring that school information remains segregated and separate from non-school information.
Dojo Tutor Information
Additionally, certain Dojo Tutor tutoring information, such as tutor assessments, feedback and other session information (e.g., session recordings) (“Dojo Tutor Information”) may be shared at the direction of the parent to their child’s teacher with the parent’s approval to the main ClassDojo Services (“Dojo Tutor Information Sharing”). When this Dojo Tutor Information Sharing occurs with the ClassDojo Services, a copy of the Dojo Tutor Information will be made to share. This is a copy of the assessment and only this copy will become Student Data once the teacher has elected to save and bring this information into either their account or the Student’s Student Account in the main ClassDojo Services. The child’s Student Account information on ClassDojo will remain separate, ensuring that school information remains segregated and separate from non-school information.
ClassDojo Plus Features or Photobooks
Parents may choose to purchase certain ClassDojo Plus features or Photobooks where some of their child's data (e.g., classroom feedback points, Class or School Story photos), including what may be considered Student Data under various state student privacy laws or education records under FERPA (or equivalent international laws), will be shared with their Outside School Account. Parents will have been prompted with Direct Notice of, and will have consented to that use and sharing of their child’s Student Data and personal information for this use at the time they purchase Photobooks or ClassDojo Plus (or at the time they engage with the feature).
Class Island Information
Please see below.
- Any Student Data that the school or district has agreed can be linked with the Student’s Outside School Child Account (pursuant to the Student Data Privacy Addendum and Terms of Service).
Teachers (and schools) do not have access to:
- Outside School Accounts: Unless you as a parent have provided parental consent for specific sharing (e.g., sharing some of your child’s tutoring information or Class Island information) as noted above, ClassDojo does not share any content or activity from the non-school use at home with an Outside School Account with the classroom. A parent or child may choose to share this content on their own in messaging or activities to that teacher (but this is not at the direction of the teacher). An exception to this is that your child’s Monster avatar (which may be customized at home) is shown in the classroom if your child also has a Student Account.
- Non-School Based ClassDojo Plus Features: Any ClassDojo Plus features used with an Outside School Child Account or for non-school use, teachers (and schools), ClassDojo does not share how these features are configured by parents. There is no way in the product for teachers (and schools) to direct the usage of ClassDojo Plus features for non-school use at home.
Please see this FAQ for more information about what information can be seen by parents and teachers for Student users and Outside School Child users.
What data is shared between Class Islands and Home Islands?
In addition to the limited data that is shared between an Outside School Child Account and Student Account as set forth in this FAQ, the following data may be shared (with parent consent) between the use of Class Island and Home Island (e.g., both in school and out of school use of Dojo Island):
- Personalizaciones y artículos de monstruos
- Listas de compañeros de clase y del colegio
- Puntos y otras monedas del juego
- Situación del juego
- Island creations (e.g., blocks)
Student Data displayed with Outside School User Data, but not linked
When parents log into the ClassDojo application, we have in-product experiences that show the separate In-School Feature Data (as defined below) and Out-of-School Feature Data (as defined below) for viewing in one screen. Notably, when a teacher shares an in-school student with a parent, that parent can then give the student at-home feedback points. Those at-home feedback points will be visible on the same page that shows the in-school feedback points. However, within our databases, the data is stored in different tables and the teacher does not have access to the Outside School Feature Data.
How is the Student Data and Outside School Child User data kept separate?
Storage of Data
Data for both in-school features, including data used with Student Accounts, (“In School Feature Data”) and features used not in connection with a school or classroom, including those used with Outside School Child Accounts, (“Outside School Feature Data”), are stored in different tables, however, certain of this data is linked or shared as set forth above. In addition, the in-school data table can only be accessed by those who need access to it as part of their role within Classdojo to provide services to the school. New requests for access need approval. The primary controls we use to separate and segregate In School Feature Data and Outside School Feature Data are separating data into different tables, access controls, audit-logs, integration tests, engineer training, bug bounties, and code structure.
For In School Feature Data, we act as a processor for schools, and the school is the entity that controls the data's lifecycle. For Outside School Feature Data (home-points, monster customization, and Home Island), we act as a controller and the parent/guardian or child is the entity who controls the data's lifecycle. Subsets of our production data are moved to our data-warehouse on a daily cadence for use in analyses. Upon parental consent as noted above, an Outside School Child account will also be linked with a Student Account, if both exist, and are utilized using one login. The “link” is that these accounts use the same login to access both products for Outside School Child Accounts and Student Accounts and the same “Dojo”/name, but the data is stored separately. The login data (the username and password) is stored in one place and shared between both the Outside School Child Account and Student Account. In addition, certain other data, including Student Data, may be shared (or linked) with parental consent as noted above.
For more information on our table-level separation, access controls, audit logs, integration testing, privacy and security testing, code separation, and the bug bounty program, please contact us at security@classdojo.com.
Aspectos importantes a tener en cuenta:
- All Student Data is stored separately from Outside School Child Account data. Note that the login data (username and password) is stored in one place and shared between both accounts as is the data set forth in the sections “What data is shared between Class Islands and Home Islands” and “What data is shared between Student Accounts and Outside School Child Accounts.”
- Please see here for further details on the storage of non-student school data (e.g., teacher and parent data).
- Some features are unavailable in the classroom—such as Home Points available in ClassDojo Plus—and that product data is stored separately. Please see here for further details on the storage of non-school data (e.g. Family Chat and Family Communities).
- Some similar features are available in class and at home (such as feedback points awarded in school, Home Islands, and Home Points awarded for non-school use). However, these are considered separate products, and this information is stored separately, unless specific sharing has been consented to by the parent.
- Data by “creator”: If we don’t have data distinguished by a feature (i.e., school or non-school based), then we know who created the data—parent, teacher, or student. The data entered by the parent at home would not be shared beyond the home product, unless the parent has separately provided consent as mentioned above. Also, as mentioned above, the one exception to this is the Dojo name/account name that is consistent across the accounts as well as the data set forth in the section “What data is shared between Class Islands and Home Islands.”
- All employees also sign a “Data Access” policy that includes strict policies around Student Data—who can access, what it can be used for, etc. and internal controls are in place for access limitations to the Student database/table.
